Gia Carangi has been called as the first supermodel. It was Gia Carangi to whom Cindy Crawford was refferd to as “baby Gia.”. On the other hand, Janice Dickinson is said to be one of the self proclaiming “world’s first supermodel. Who is Gia Carangi?

On the 18th of November , 1986, at 10 am, Gia Marie Carangi died at a hospital in Philadelphia. She was only 26 years old.

Gia Carangi was an incredibly beautiful woman. She was born on the 29th of January , 1960 in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At age 18 she moved to New York and quickly became one of the most popular models in the world. Many important fashion photographers wanted to work with her: Francesco Scavullo, Arthur Elgort, Richard Avedon, and Chris von Wangenheim .She traveled around the world and her face appeared on the covers of Vogue, Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan …Everyone wanted to be by her side.

Gia Carangi’s story was very dramatic. Her way up to the world of international supermodels was as fast as her fall to the drugs hell, prostitution, and eventually AIDS, which killed her.

Gia carangi has honor to be the first Supermodel (Late 1970s to Early 1980s), even this honor is also given to other models like “Cindy Crawford, Dorianleigh and Janice Dickinson”. Gia Carangi has also seen on the cover page of fashion magazines like “Vogue in 1st April 1979; Vogue Paris in April, 1979; American Vogue in August 1980; Italian Vogue in January, 1981 and many other issues of “Cosmopolitan” during 1979-1982”.

Gia Carangi was an American fashion model during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Her father is Italian American, and her mother is American of Irish and Welsh ancestry. Carangi was considered by some to be the first supermodel,although that title has also been given to others, including Janice Dickinson and Dorian Leigh

She never went through the tough rejections that other models faced; she was considered a “rare gem” in the modeling business. Partially due to supermodel Janice Dickinson’s success, the need for more ethnic looking models was in. She was seen striking, and was a hit with all the photographers.
