Roman Polanski's Free-Jazz Getaway
Looks like it's back to jazzy shindigs and multi-million dollar compounds (sans electronic bracelets) for Roman Polanski…but not in the States just yet.
Mere days after his release, the Oscar-winning director made his first public appearance Saturday at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, according to the New York Post.
The 76-year-old director was originally taken into custody last September on a U.S. warrant stemming from a statutory rape conviction in 1977.
He fled the country in 1978 before he could be charged for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in California.
Polanski hit the jazz fest to see wife Emmanuelle Seigner sing—and she aptly began her concert with the theme from his film, Rosemary's Baby.
There was no applause (or boos) for Polanski following the mini-tribute though, because despite the media scrum surrounding the director's case, he kept a low profile inside the concert with the help of security.
But in an interview with Swiss television scheduled for broadcast Saturday night, Polanski thanked his wife and children for their support, without whom, he said, "I would never have succeeded in keeping my dignity and perseverance."
As for where he's headed next, Polanski said he plans to return to his pricey compound in Gstaad, Switzerland.
Chinatown will just have to wait.
